TRAINING COURSES IN 2012

The Michael Palin Centre is a team of experienced specialist speech and language therapists working in the field of disorders of fluency, with a range of additional post-graduate qualifications. Members of the team are involved in clinical work with children and adults who stammer, offering a full individual consultation service, specialist therapy packages on an individual or group basis, a range of teaching within our national teaching programme, supervision of generalist and specialist therapists, writing and research.

We approach stammering from a multi-factorial perspective and tailor our treatment accordingly. We collaborate closely as a team and with others in the profession, and place an emphasis on working with the whole family system. Our approach is integrative and responsive to the needs of each individual. Alongside fluency therapy, we aim to address issues of behaviour management, develop family problem solving skills, increase children's self-esteem and offer support to parents. We help the children and their parents to make changes in their view of the stammering problem, in their view of themselves and of their coping ability, in making choices about how they approach problems and in making changes in behavioural terms.

We draw on a range of psychological treatment methods in our work, in particular Personal Construct Psychology, Brief Therapy and Cognitive Therapy. We believe that psychological reconstruction of the problem facilitates long-term maintenance so we place equal value on addressing the psychological aspects of stammering as well as the behavioural components.

Courses run from 9.15am until 4.45pm each day.
