FREE TRAINING IN 2008!

In 2008 we are offering free training to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children.

The Michael Palin Centre is a team of experienced specialist speech and language therapists working in the field of disorders of fluency, with a range of additional post-graduate qualifications. Each member of the team is involved in clinical work with children and adults who stammer, offering a full individual consultation service, specialist therapy packages on an individual or group basis, a range of teaching within our national teaching programme, supervision of generalist and specialist therapists, writing and research.

We approach stammering from a multi-factorial perspective and tailor our treatment accordingly. We collaborate closely as a team and with others in the profession, and place an emphasis on working with the whole family system. Our approach is integrative and responsive to the needs of each individual. Alongside fluency therapy, we aim to address issues of behaviour management, develop family problem solving skills, increase children’s self-esteem and offer support to parents. We help the children and their parents to make changes in their view of the stammering problem, in their view of themselves and of their coping ability, in making choices about how they approach problems and in making changes in behavioural terms.

We draw on a range of psychological treatment methods in our work, in particular Personal Construct Psychology, Brief Therapy and Cognitive Therapy. We believe that psychological reconstruction of the problem facilitates long-term maintenance so we place equal value on addressing the psychological aspects of stammering as well as the behavioural components.

Courses run from 9.30am until 5pm each day. Registration on the first day of each course will begin at 9am

INDIVIDUAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT THE MICHAEL PALIN CENTRE.

A variety of training options are offered at the Michael Palin Centre to qualified Speech and Language Therapists who wish to further develop their skills in working with children or young people who stammer.

Scroll down for:
1. Supervision
2. One week training
3. Children’s intensive course (14th 25th July 2008)
4. Young Adults intensive course (28th July – 8th August 2008)

1. SUPERVISION
We offer individual supervision sessions to generalist and specialist therapists working with clients who stammer of all ages. Frequency and timing of sessions can be arranged according to your individual needs and may include discussion of therapy approaches, video material and clinical cases.
Cost £95 per hour

2. ONE WEEK TRAINING
Therapists wishing to observe a range of assessment and therapy sessions can elect to visit the centre for one week. While there is less opportunity to explore one particular age group or therapy programme in depth, this week gives a good overview of assessment procedures, and allows therapists to observe and discuss a broad range of therapy approaches. Time is allocated each day for clinical discussion.

Trainees can expect to see a range of therapy sessions, with various therapy techniques being used with a range of ages. It may be possible to observe:
· Parent-child interaction therapy
· Direct fluency work using an integrated approach (fluency shaping & block modification)
· Lidcombe Programme
· Family communication skills work
· Counselling approaches (Cognitive Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Personal Construct Psychology). A counselling approach may form the basis of a session or interventions may be integrated with other aspects of therapy for older children, teenagers and adults.

Trainees will have the opportunity to observe at least one initial assessment and have discussion time with staff at the Centre about a range of clinical issues.

Please note that this week is primarily an observation week and that the programme will ultimately depend on the team’s bookings for the selected week and client consent to being observed.

The trainee week is suitable for therapists who have already completed at least one MPC workshop and who have an active caseload of children or young people who stammer. Therapists who wish to apply from overseas may do so without having attended a previous workshop. If applying from overseas please confirm that you hold a qualification to practise as a Speech and Language Therapist.

Accommodation is not provided, however a list of hotels in the area, and a local University which offers rooms, is available on request.

Cost: £300 per person

3. INTENSIVE GROUP THERAPY FOR CHILDREN AGED 10-14 YEARS AND THEIR PARENTS (14th - 25th July 2008)

This non-residential course is usually run twice during each year, once at Easter and once in July. The group meets Monday – Friday for 2 weeks.

A children’s group and parents’ group are run in parallel with two therapists leading the parents’ group and two or three therapists from the centre running the children’s group. Where a two-parent family both parents are required to attend for the duration of the course. The group focuses on desensitisation towards stammering, experimentation with fluency control strategies, communication skills confidence, and family awareness of communication skills. Elements of Cognitive Therapy are integrated into the programme.

The intensive course programme runs daily Monday – Friday for 2 weeks. Clients attend the group from 10 – 3pm and therapists work together from 9am –5pm. This allows time for planning and on-going discussion and formulation of need. The children work in a separate group from their parents however every day there are some activities which are conducted jointly.

Therapists attending this course as trainees can expect to:

Ø Divide their time between observing the parents’ group and observing the childrens’ group. As most therapists have less experience of working with parents in a group setting we place a priority on this.

Ø Have individual discussion time each day with the lead therapists in order to clarify personal learning aims and elaborate questions and discussion points.

Ø Learn how communication skills, development of fluency strategies and dealing with speech fears are introduced in a group setting with children.

Ø Learn how communication skills are introduced within a parents’ group and how key issues for parents are managed.

Ø Develop awareness of group facilitation skills and increase confidence in working with groups.

Cost: £500 per person

4. YOUNG ADULTS INTENSIVE COURSE

28th July – 8th August 2008.

This two-week, intensive, group therapy course for teenagers aged between 15 and 18 years of age is held in July or August each year. The therapy integrates speech management, cognitive therapy and communication skills work in a group setting.

Therapists attending this course as trainees can expect to:

· Increase their understanding of key issues in working with groups of teenagers.
· Increase their confidence in working with groups of teenagers.
· Increase their understanding of the role of fluency shaping, block modification, cognitive therapy and communication skills work in therapy for this age group.
· Be integrated into the group and enjoy practical “hands-on” experience as well as observing the MPC therapists working with the group.
· Have discussion time each day with one of the lead therapists.

Cost: £500 per person
