Questions & Answers
There are many assumptions made and questions asked about stammering
which often have their roots in misconceptions, old wives' tales,
inaccurate opinions or out-of-date research. We shall try to cover
the common ones in this section...
#1: "Is stammering just a phase which children
go through?"
#2: "If we ignore it, will it go away?"
#3: "If I draw attention to it, will I make
it worse?"
#4: "Can parents cause stammering?"
#5: "Are people who stammer shy and nervous?"
#6: "Does it start when a left-handed child
is forced to write with their right hand?"
#7: "Can you catch stammering?"
#8: "Does it have something to do with intelligence?"
#9: "Why is my daughter's stammer quite
different now that she is a teenager?"
#10: "Why can't my son say words beginning
with the letter 'b'?"
#11: "Why does the stammer disappear sometimes
and then return in certain situations?"
#12: "Why don't other people understand?
Why are they so unkind?"
Our job is to try to help as many people as possible to understand
stammering better! This includes dispelling some of the myths and
legends that have developed over the years. |

James
(16) has had therapy on and off since he was four and was at first
reluctant to join the group intensive course for young adults.
However he told his parents afterwards that meeting others with the
same problem had been really helpful and that they were all quite
normal and really good fun!
