Research at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children

A study to investigate the effectiveness of parent-child interaction therapy with preschool children who stammer - a request for participants

What is the Michael Palin Centre?

The Michael Palin Centre is a national centre, which specialises in the assessment and treatment of children who stammer. In addition to assessment and therapy, the Michael Palin Centre has an active research programme with the aim of helping us to learn more about the nature of stammering and how best to help those who stammer. The Centre is jointly funded by Islington Primary Care Trust (formerly Camden & Islington NHS Services Trust) and a Charity, the Association for Research into Stammering in Childhood.

A study to investigate the effectiveness of parent-child interaction therapy with young children who stammer

One of the projects being carried out at the Centre is looking at how effective parent child interaction therapy is. This is one of the therapy approaches which has been used with young children who stammer for a number of years. While it is considered by many to be a very effective way to treat stammering in preschool children, like many therapies for stammering, there is little research evidence to support it.

The project has been set up in conjunction with The University of Reading and has received ethical approval from both the Local Research Ethics Committee for Camden and Islington PCTs and University of Reading.

What does the study involve?

The study will compare the progress of a group of children who receive therapy with a group of children who are waiting for treatment. Each child is randomly put in to one of the two groups and takes part in the project for a period of 9 months. Each family makes video recordings at home once a week for 20 minutes, so that the child's fluency and language can be assessed. The number of recordings depends on the group the child is put in to:

a) Children in the Therapy group make weekly recordings for a period of 18 weeks (6 weeks before, during and after therapy). The recordings are also made 6 weeks before the final review appointment, which takes place 6 months after therapy ends.

b) Children in the Waiting list group make weekly recordings for 6 weeks and then again 6 weeks before their full assessment.

Who can take part?

We are asking parents. Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals to refer children who:
  • are under 4 years 6 months at the start of the project
  • have been stammering for a minimum of 12 months
  • have had no formal speech and language therapy for stammering in the previous 6 months
  • have no identified syndrome or learning disability
  • use English as the primary language at home
In addition:
  • the family needs to be willing / able to attend the Michael Palin Centre for assessment and therapy

Thank you for taking the time to read this information and to consider this project. We appreciate all the time and commitment made by parents and families who help in this and other research projects. It is only with this support from families that we can learn more about stammering and its treatment.
