Gareth Defeated In Pop Idol Final
Gareth Gates, the young singer with a stammer, was defeated in the
final of ITV's "Pop Idol" by William Young last night.
Having been favourite for much of the series, he was outdone by William
on the final show and was defeated by the margin of six per cent.
Gareth gained 47% of the vote compared to Will's 53%.
The Michael Palin Centre would like to thank Gareth for bringing stammering
to the forefront of people's minds, and are convinced that by raising
awareness of the problem, he will have helped hundreds, if not thousands,
of young stammering children around the country.

Raja (9) stammers, and so do his father and grandfather. He was being
teased at school, so he came for a two-week intensive course with
his parents. He says he can speak up for himself now, and that school
is no longer a problem.
