Stammering As A Young Adult

User question

I would like some advice on behalf of my son, who is 22. He has stammered/stuttered (what is the difference, if any?) all his life, which comes and goes in severity.

When he is under stress he gets quite bad. He gave up university as he could not cope with giving presentations and was beginning to have panic attacks. He enjoyed the social side of the university and has made many friends through it, so it did not stop that aspect!!

His confidence at the moment is very low, he is trying to get a 'proper' job, but is not having much luck. He has been to several agencies but they haven't come up with anything, other than a telesales (which he laughed at, saying what a daft job it would be for him!) Have you any advice as to what he can do to help his speech?

Our advice

Thank you for your enquiry regarding your son. Stammering can affected people in so many ways and your son's story is unfortunately not so uncommon. The British Stammering Association www.stammering.org has lots of helpful books, leaflets and tapes. I would also suggest that he goes to a specialist speech and language therapist to find out about suitable courses and treatment options. The British Stammering Association has a directory of services available throughout the UK.

Rees (10) only stammered at school and only in some lessons. It made a real difference to him when we arranged an informal meeting for him, his teacher and his parents. He came up with some sensible ideas to help his teacher deal with those difficult moments.
