Stammering And Apraxia
User question
Has there been any research indicating a relationship between verbal
apraxia and stuttering? My 3 year old son, has made remarkable progress
with his apraxia, but has been developing stuttering problems in the
last 2 months which should not be happening.
Our advice
Thanks for your request for information on verbal apraxia and stuttering. There
is unfortunately no specific research that indicates a relationship
between the two.
However, it is known that children with verbal apraxia clearly experience
difficulty with the coordination of the complex and finely-timed movements
involved in speech production. This reduced speech motor coordination
ability is known to be a factor that may put children at more risk
of stammering. This may be one of the reasons why your son is currently
presenting with dysfluent speech.
It would appear from your e-mail that your son is currently receiving
help for his verbal apraxia and we would recommend that you also seek
advice with regards to his dysfluency in order to ensure that he receives
treatment for it, should it be required.
All the very best.

Rees (10) only stammered at school and only in some lessons. It made
a real difference to him when we arranged an informal meeting for
him, his teacher and his parents. He came up with some sensible ideas
to help his teacher deal with those difficult moments.
