Stammering is a severe communication problem which affects life chances

Stammering can affect a child’s social and emotional development. It can affect academic choices, reduce career options and prevent an individual from making their full contribution to society.

The Michael Palin Centre (MPC)

Established in 1993, MPC is run by NHS Islington with the support of a charity, the Association for Research into Stammering in Childhood (ARSC).

Clinical Services

1. Charitably funded specialist consultation and assessment:

Referrals are made by Speech and Language Therapists (SLT), GPs or other professionals for expert advice and guidance. The child and parents/carers as well as the referring SLT attend the consultation session.

Clinical recommendations are based on the formal and informal measures of the presenting problem, the child and family perspectives, case report, history of therapy, and current research evidence.

In the majority of cases, the agreed recommendations will be delivered by the family’s local SLT service.

2. NHS funded specialist therapy programmes provided at MPC

In some cases (approx 30%) it is recommended that therapy is provided at Michael Palin Centre.
Criteria include:
• Lack of local resources for the individual needs of the client/family (e.g. group intensive programmes)
• Parental choice
• Complexity of problem

Evidence based practice:
All clinical activity is conducted in collaboration with clients, with ethical consideration, and according to principles of evidence based practice and clinical governance. Protocols and formal measures ensure that progress and outcome of treatment are closely monitored (see Clinical Guidelines, RCSLT ) and reported to families and, with consent, circulated to appropriate professionals.

Outcomes:
MPC’s holistic approach, delivering tailored and integrated services to support the best outcomes for children, young people and their parents is consistent with the government priorities
• Early intervention is highly effective
• Therapy for more long standing problems can make a significant difference to the individual’s confidence and competence in communicating and ability to participate in daily life situations.

Tariff:
Band One therapy: £1900
Band Two therapy: £3600
