"If we ignore it, will it go away?"

Well, yes and no. Many parents receive this advice from friends and some professionals. This obviously works well for those children who are going to grow out of it anyway! However, if the child is aware of the difficulties, is expressing concern or frustration with his or her speech, this advice can be extremely unhelpful.

Many children are aware of their problem from an early age - children as young as three have described their stammering and the difficulties they are facing.

It is also easier said than done! Generally speaking, advising anyone who is anxious about something to just "ignore it" is usually unhelpful and frequently impossible. Neither does it feel right for some parents - it goes against their instinct which is to help in some way.

Suggestions and comments such as "there's no hurry" and "I'm listening" can often be helpful and encouraging.

Rees (10) only stammered at school and only in some lessons. It made a real difference to him when we arranged an informal meeting for him, his teacher and his parents.

He came up with some sensible ideas to help his teacher deal with those difficult moments.
